A Closer Look at Chicago Bungalows

  • August 16, 2011

by Erin Calandriello

With the Chicago Bungalow bus tours happening this fall, UrbanTurf decided to get in the spirit and pick out some of its favorite bungalows currently on the market in Chicago.

We hope to give you a glimpse of what the Chicago Architecture Foundation will show you on its upcoming tours in North Side neighborhoods including Ravenswood Manor, the Villa, Portage Park, Galewood and the Schorsch Irving Park Garden Historic District.

Three-Bedroom Mayfair Brick Bungalow

Located on a one-way street in Mayfair, this three-bedroom, two-bath bungalow is registered with the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association, a nonprofit organization started by Mayor Richard M. Daley in September 2000 to preserve the property type in Chicago. With its hardwood floors, wooden doors, crown molding, large windows and unfinished attic, the property has many bungalow-ish features. However, the owners updated the kitchen and bathrooms and finished their basement. The bedrooms are a bit on the small side, but the home provides some great outdoor space, including a wood deck and built-in seats.

  • Full Listing: 4820 N. Tripp Avenue (map)
  • Price: $349,800
  • Bedrooms: Three
  • Bathrooms: Two
  • Year Built: 1923

Four-Bedroom Frame Bungalow Close to Wilson Park

This four-bedroom, three-bath frame bungalow in Portage Park has a larger than average front porch (for bungalow), a new kitchen with a limited amount of cabinet space (but there’s room for a breakfast bar on wheels or a large cutting block table), a remodeled basement with fairly high ceilings and a master bedroom with an attached bathroom and a walk-in closet. The attic is also finished and it’s octagonal ceiling may not be ideal, but it’s spacious and could be perfect for an office, playroom or fifth bedroom. The property is close to Wilson Park, one of Chicago’s nicest parks on the Northwest side, and it comes with a two-car detached garage.

  • Full Listing: 4640 N. Leamington Avenue (map)
  • Price: $319,000
  • Bedrooms: Four
  • Bathrooms: Three
  • Year Built: 1913
  • Listing Agent: Dennis Shaffer, Baird & Warner

Jefferson Park Checkerboard Bungalow on Tree-Lined Street

Built in 1928, this four-bedroom, three-bath checkerboard bungalow sits on a tree-lined street in Jefferson Park. It has a large living room with stained glass windows, a formal dining room, and a basement, that while finished, could use some updating as it seems to be stuck in the mid-1970s. However, the upper floors compensate for what’s lacking on the bottom, particularly the remodeled attic, which has vaulted ceilings and could be an ideal room for the independent teenager. However, an air conditioning unit would be a must up there (or the potential buyer could install central heat and air throughout the dwelling).

  • Full Listing: 5828 N. Manton Avenue (map)
  • Price: $349,000
  • Bedrooms: Four
  • Bathrooms: Three
  • Year Built: 1928
  • Listing Agent: Jeanine Sekera, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage
